Atlas: A Collection of Learning Tools

In Greek mythology, Atlas was a Titan, one of the ancient gods who ruled before Zeus and the Olympians. When the Titans rebelled against Zeus in the great Titanomachy (the ten-year war between Titans and Olympians), Atlas fought on the losing side.

As punishment for his defiance, Zeus condemned him to hold up the heavens for all eternity — to literally bear the weight of the sky upon his shoulders. Contrary to popular imagery, Atlas wasn’t holding the Earth — he was holding the celestial sphere, keeping the sky and the Earth apart.
